Hertz (Hz) is the number of images displayed per second every time the monitor refreshes. This means that a 60Hz monitor will refresh images and return 60 images per second while a 120Hz monitor returns 120 images per second every time it refreshes.
Essentially, a higher refresh rate will mean that the image you see is updated quicker. This can be very useful for action games or competitive games where every millisecond counts. Especially Battle Royale and Multiplayers games like CS:GO, Call of Duty, Overwatch, Battlefield, Fortnite, PUBG, etc.
Frames per second explain how many frames are rendered on your graphics card per second, while the monitor refresh rate explains how many times your image is actually updated on your monitor. The disadvantage of high refresh rate monitors is that they require an expensive GPU (or graphics card) to help the game run at a steady 144 fps. Now, even if you’re getting 10 fps in a game you can still use a 144Hz monitor, but there won’t be a difference in smoothness at all; to have a difference between a 144Hz monitor and a 60Hz one you need to be running at anything above 60 fps but for a noticeable difference you’ll need at least 100 fps.
If you have a 60Hz monitor and you want to upgrade, with a small difference in performance between 120Hz and 144Hz, choosing 120Hz over 144Hz isn’t the worst thing in the world if you can’t afford a 144Hz option. However, if you can afford to get a 144HZ monitor then you 100% should invest. Minute differences can be seen but overall, 144Hz still show superiority over 120Hz. This is the main reason why competitive players tend to opt for higher refresh rates.
