What is a Mechanical Keyboard?

A mechanical keyboard is a keyboard built with high quality, typically spring activated. A mechanical keyboard has actual, physical switches beneath the keys that recreate the experience of typing on a typewriter. Press a key, and you press its switch down.

Most PC keyboards are composed of a set of three plastic membranes, with rubber dome-shaped switches underneath each key. Press a key, and the rubber switch pushes through a hole in the middle membrane to connect the top and bottom membranes, which creates an electrical circuit that causes the keyboard to send the input to your PC. This keyboard design is inexpensive and spill-resistant, but it doesn’t give you as much tactile or audible feedback when you press a key, which can change the way you type. In comparison, the membrane keyboard may feel “mushy.”

Mechanical keyboards raise the bar in every way. A mechanical keyboard’s switches, framing, functionality, type print methods, key construction, PCB board, LED lighting (sharpness, brightness, adjustability), and a slew of other features are far superior compared to traditional rubber dome keyboards. Most of these improvements boil down to one thing – feel. Mechanical keyboards simply feel better than rubber dome keyboards.


In the last few years, mechanical keyboards have gained more attention as gamers and typists look for higher-quality keyboards. Gaming keyboards have become quite sophisticated and often feature mechanical switches. Many mechanical keyboard users claim they can type faster and more accurately than they can on membrane keyboards. Most mechanical switches only need to be pressed halfway before registering a keystroke, which means less work for your fingers. Essentially, mechanical keyboards facilitate an economy of movement that membrane keyboards simply cannot mimic.

Perhaps the most attractive, and yet also most intimidating, thing about mechanical keyboards is that they are not all the same. There are many types of mechanical switches and each can greatly affect the way a keyboard feels. The actuation force required to register a keystroke on membrane keyboards is often considerably lower than that on mechanical keyboards, which can lead to typos and slips of the finger. Mechanical keyboards are often more accurate than membrane boards. Reliability is especially important in gaming keyboards, when players must count on each and every keystroke.
